Only Four More Sleeps Until Turkey Day!

This picture may explain why the fresh turkey I ordered from Ladyslipper Free Range Poultry Farms Ltd. has not been delivered yet. It's ok though because I have a 23 pounder in the freezer. Note to self: Take it OUT of the freezer TODAY!

Thaw

Him

At

Wunce!

We will have the standard delicious need-a-nap-later fare: Roast Turkey basted with sage butter, bread stuffing (which is basically the same recipe that my Mom and Grandmother made with celery, onions, parsley. sage and thyme), mashed potatoes with 23 gallons of gravy, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, corn and another veggie side dish (usually green bean casserole) and p-u-m-p-k-i-n pie with whipped cream on top. Hoowah!

I've served several versions of everything through the years and this one seems to be the combination that everyone prefers.

I like the dark meat the best. It's MINE, MINE all MINE. Keep yer mitts off that drumstick. At least it once was all mine. The Mister always liked white meat. One year, he must have gotten knocked in the head because out of the blue he starts piling dark meat on his plate and he says "Oh yes I am too having dark meat. I've always liked it." So, I have this turkey main lining competitor for the best part of the bird. I may have him hypnotized before next Turkey Day.

Our long time friends Sue and Bill will have dinner with us. Sue is making the veggies and the pies. I choose my guests carefully - it's all about who likes white meat.

So, five for dinner and a 23 lb. turkey. You do the math.

What are you having? What are your favorites? Do you like dark meat? (answers to this last question will determine future guest lists)

I like white meat! So what time is this scrumptious meal??!! :o)

Sounds just like our menu, by the way. I just reminded Sweetie today WE MUST GET PUMPKIN PIE AND WHIPPED CREAM (I have to shout now because he's losing his hearing ... wonder why??). Too much wind noise? varoom varoom

Sparky - dinner is at 2:00 - since you are a fan of white meat. Bring the Mister.

Sea Angel! Yes - it's really Thankgiving but the turkey gets the starring role of the day, after giving thanks, of course.

I like the WHITE meat! The hubby likes the dark. And I had to do a lot of convincing for his mom (who is hosting this year) to have a turkey. They like to have the unconventional - chicken mole (they're mexican), or quail or pheasant (too much work to eat a little bird!)

Oooo! I adore the white meat...and the white meat only...my only worry is that will you have enought gravey??? LOL :)

I'm *trying* to simplify our menu this year as we are going to be in a hotel with a kitchenette. Yeah, we could go out to eat, I guess, but I decided we could have a smallish Thanksgiving feast in our suite. So I'm planning roast turkey breast, instant potatoes, green bean casserole (in the microwave), creamy corn (in the microwave), and then some purchased rolls, salad, and pie. I think it will still be delicious even if it's not made-from-scratch!

Everyone's coming to my house this year. God have mercy on my soul.

Shelly - white meat? You may come but not sure about your Mister with the dark meat and all. Maybe I could share a little. Tell your Mom -in-law congress requires us to have turkey on Thanksgiving. It's a government holiday.

Margaret Ann - I promise to have plenty of gravy - tastey and no lumps!

Karla - sounds like a plan! Publsix has ready made green been casserole in the deli section - not need to even put it together yourself!

Ooooh Pamela - I have done the family T-Day many times and know you are going to have a very busy day!!

Our Thanksgiving was last months. We Canadians, we're always ahead of you Yanks ha ha ha!

I ordered a 13 pound bird for Christmas. Did I already mention that?

Your stuffing sounds very familiar. I make the same kind except I got mine off the Milk calendar and there is some milk in it. And plenty of sherry. Any that doesn't accidentally fall down my throat as I'm making the stuffing, that is.

Your feast sounds great. What time should I arrive? I promise to eat only white meat. The pumpkin pie sounds great, but what are the rest of you having for dessert? Tee hee, aren't I the perfect guest (from hell?)??

I'm great with clean up though. I mean, I can spot foodstains on the cutlery from my perch on the living room sofa and point them out to whoever is washing the dishes in the kitchen. It's a talent I have cultivated, over time. Nearly gotten me killed a time or two, I wonder why...

MuseSwings said...

Yes, you Canadians jumped the gun, but now you have to toddle off to work while we enjoy a 4 day weekend and eat leftovers. Are you getting the Christmas bird from your farm or are you going to be running around at Shelly's with your flintlock?

The Milk Calendar? The Pope sent me my calendar last year and he doesn't put any recipes on it. Only personal admonishments to you and I.

Come any time Lavinia - there will be at least two pies. You may have one and the rest will share the other. We get dibs on using the whipping cream first though, thankyouverymuch.

The Mister shares your sofa monitoring trait. It's neary gotten him killed a few times too!

Who is Shelly and what is a flintlock. I have a butcher with real sawdust on the floor and I phoned him and said, "this is my order" and he called me a jive turkey and I said you are asking for a smackdown and he said....oh never mind. I hung up before things got ugly but he got the message. I belive in the customer always being right. Can you tell. Hey, I'll give you dibs on the whipping cream! As for the calendar, I always knew that latin class we were forced to take in Convent school would one day come in handy. I know that all the Pope's correspondence is in Latin and I even know the Pope's stationer. It's Pineiders.

We are having a smaller celebration this year. We are having three pies, one apple, one pumpkin, and then a second pumpkin made with splenda for the strange sugar-does-not pass-her-lips daughter. We have a twenty pound turkey which will be stuffed. Potatoes, gravy, sweet potato souffle, green bean casserole, homemade rolls, homemade cranberry sauce. I'm making the bread and pies and cranberry sauce tomorrow. I'm assembling the stuffing (except for the wet ingredients). My kids have volunteered to do the meal itself, and I will let them give of themselves, and I will be grateful.

Shelly is one of our best friends! Tch. from Birding in Michigan. Her site is on my margin along with my other faves. It's a Flintlock rifle. Kind of vintage. Civil War, revolutionary war.
The Pope uses Office Max exclusively - trying to cut corners too you know. Justin II - The Swiss Guard he sent for security purposes in Rome told me.

Debbie - dinner sounds wonderful! Especially the part where the daughters will help. Should give you time to keep an eye on Lavinia while I'm watching the parade. Wanna do 2 hour shifts or 3?

Esther said...

I love white meat - may I join you for dinner? Oh, I forgot, we're cooking here. Maybe next year? ;)

Your feast will be delicious, I'm sure! Enjoy the day and the naps that follow.

Esther - It's so nice to have you back in bloggyland! See you at Thanksgiving next year then.

Your post made me smile and laugh this evening, very clever! I like white meat, but I am more into the potatoes, sweet and mashed. Here's hoping your Thanksgiving is full of love and joyful memories. Blessings, Katie

MuseSwings said...

Hi, Katie! Blessings and happy Thanksgiving to you as well! Enjoy your taters and I will too.

Sparky - I didn't see the beautiful award until a moment ago - I think the award you saw in the margin earlier was the picture from your latest post. I am going to add it to my award list now though - it's beautiful and I will post about it in just a day or so. Thank you!

we don´t eat so much turkey here. Add me to the list please!

Another lover of white meat, me. Especially turkey - though that may simply be because we have it more rarely than chicken.

Debby, please post that sweet potato souffle recipe or email me at birdbath@birdlover.com. Thanks.

Dave - thank you so much for stopping by! Since you have a professed preference for white meat you are invited for Thanksgiving! 2:00 ish - that's EST.

Loover - Sweet potatoe souffle sounds delish - If Deb won't fork over the recipe I'll post one of mine.

Muse: Daughters and son. 'Twas actually the boy's idea, and the girls are quite excited about it.

Musey, she forked it over alright...with a pitchfork that 'accidentally' poked me and gave me an ouchy!

Louver is a big whiney baby.

Put the pitchfork down, Debby!

MuseSwings said...

Step away from the pitchfork! Lavinder - try to maintain w/o whining - here's a Barbie bandaid for your owey.

For me Thanksgiving is all about stuffing and --oh yeah-- the giving thanks thing. In fact I could really just skip the bird because he's just a middle man. Just put the stuffing in me. Your recipe sounds like my mom's. I'll come over at 2:00 and sneak some of the white meat to Lucy and Layla. I like mashing turnips and carrots with fresh nutmeg with a little butter and orange juice.

OK here's the plan for the Mister. We'll extract some tryptophan from the turkey and slip it to him in a delectable amuse-bouche, and while he's slumbering blissfully you can make a grab for the dark meat. If he wakes up prematurely, Blicky will distract him with a dance number (like Kevin Bacon's angry dance scene from Footloose). Then you can just smile and say "Oh sweetie I hope you had a nice rest."

MuseSwings said...

Brilliant, Blicky-the whole plan is brilliant. Except, the Mister doesn't need tryptophan to fall asleep. All I have to do is say something like, "The Mister, would you please..." and he's snoring before I finish the sentence.I would like to see the dance number though. And the turnips - Some of that too, please. So I'll see you at 2:00! The turkey is just the middleman? Bwahahahaha!

steviewren said...

I'm with Blicky on skipping the turkey, but stuff the dressing in me...that is where it will end up anyway!

What a bummer your gorgeous girls won't be home to share the holiday with you!

I'm a dark meat lover myself, so I can respect your love for it! Tell the DH to back away from the legs!

MuseSwings said...

Come on over Stevie - I'll make extra stuffing. Janeen - if we can convince the Mister to stick with the white meat I'll share the good stuff with you. Just don't be piling it too high on your plate. I'll be watching!

Dark meat rules!!!

Sorry. I get a little agitated on that topic.

Have a fabulous Thanksgiving!!!

I knew you were a woman after my own heart, Anna, but since you are a major competitor at the dinner table I'm afraid things might become violent - so let's do Easter instead and keep our turkeys to ourselves!
Hugs and Happy Thanksgiving!
