Sepia Saturday - Delphine

Delphine is graduating from High School today. It's a bright warm day in June, 1940 and she is about to join her best friend, Dora, and class of young women at Nativity High School. But first, she and her sisters, Rita, Jean, and Marcy fuss with her hair and artfully apply a touch of make-up - just enough to pass the scrutiny of the nuns.

Rita made this beautiful white cotton batiste gown with the ruffled hem and tiny bows. A last minute touch up with a little starch and hot iron puff the sleeves and give body to the yards of fabric that make up the skirt.

This beautiful young ingenue, my mother, poses for pictures and enjoys her moment in the sun.

Wasn't she lovely! Isn't it rewarding to pay tribute to those family members who made us what we are today?
(I've been in that "nun-scrutiny" zone; you have to be tricky!)

Wonderful post, Cynthia!

A lovely young woman in a beautiful dress. And your prose brings an immediacy to the event rescuing it from the dust of history.

Lovely! She was quite the seamstress, too!

Mom was a wonderful seamstress - and made so many things -including my own graduation dress!

I really like her pose. She knows she looks grand and elegant. That is a great photo and your write up is grand also. I may have to post my mom's grad photo in the future. She was a 1937 grad.

Incredible dress and lovely Delphine, and I, like the others, love the way you've written this.

I adore the name Delphine.

Very sweet...lovely, feminine dress too. Somehow, we have gotten away from the dress as its own art form...Is it just me, or do ladies dresses seem bereft of imagination these days? Wonderul that you have this photo of your mother--a beautiful woman and talented seamstress as well! Believe it or not, I made my graduation of white pique, but it was the late 60's and somewhat shorter!
My first time here and so glad I came!

Great story. She looks like a movie star! (I have a couple of pics of my mom from hs and I remember as a little kid thinking the same thing) And to have her own sister seamstress. I love the name, "Nativity High School". I'm sure the nuns approved.
